Checking & Prepping The Skin

Technical #1 With Sue Maidstone

We went back to basics for our first technical makeup lesson with Sue and were taught how to properly cleanse, tone and moisturise our models faces and to check for any contagious complaints, eyes or skin diseases. We were able to practise with a partner and so we helped each other with commentary and feedback.
Scabies, Impetigo and Ringworm

Some examples of common skin diseases scabies, impetigo and ringworm. All of these conditions can be recognised through characteristics like itchiness, redness or dry skin. If any of these arise whilst working on a client you must consult with them before to work out what products can be used and all products must be completely sanitised after.

Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising
-Do not exfoliate on the day of. Recommend exfoliating the night before as it can bring the skin out in a reaction or redness.
-Always make work station or surface clean by laying a towel down
-Use hypoallergenic products
-Ask about contact lenses

Cleanser (use with pads)

  • Removes makeup and grime.
  • If you do not remove previous makeup, it is not a blank canvas. Also do not want to spread the grime.
  • For men, use tissue with cleanser as cotton wool can attach itself to fine stubble.
  • Use cotton buds to cleanse around the eyes

Toner (use with pads)

  • Further removes any residue of makeup or dirt.
  • Preps skin for moisture
  • If client has a lot of eye makeup on, offer for them to rub it off as they will be able to apply more pressure

Moisturiser (use hands)
  • Hydrates the skin
  • Preps skin for base

Client Consultation

Before doing any prepping or makeup on our models, we must have a client consultation to cover any known medical or skin conditions and discuss skin types and colours. The steps for a client consultation are as follows:

  1. Place a gown on client
  2. Discuss any skin or known conditions that will affect the transformation process
  3. Look at skin type, any dry skin, oily skin, blemishes or skin complaints (keep communication open throughout the entire process as client must remain comfortable)
  4. When happy, discuss what I will be doing and proceed once both client and I are happy

Process
  1. Keep hair out of face with hair clips
  2. Always say 'I'm going to wash my hands' (just so client is aware of hygiene!)
  3. Tilt models head up, start from the neck and use upwards motions to apply cleanser with cotton pads
  4. For eyebrows, wipe across both ways to remove any eyebrow products from hairs
  5. For eyes, get model to focus on something above and use cotton buds across lash lines
  6. Repeat process with toner to remove all makeup
  7. Use a pea-sized amount of moisturiser and rub in palms
  8. Rub moisturiser with same technique of upwards motions from the neck to forehead

My Products

For my kit I wanted to purchase my own products to use in and outside of class on all my clients. Sue advised we should always invest in hypoallergenic products to avoid any reactions. I decided to purchase Nivea Sensitive Cleansing Milk, L'Oreal Skin Perfection Velvety-Soft Toner and L'Oreal Triple Active (Sensitive Skin) Comforting Moisturiser. All products are suitable for sensitive skin or are hypoallergenic so will hopefully be available for me to use on all clients as they should cover all skin types.
